Blandford Yuletide Festival 2011 - More Positive Aspects...

I think I got a bit carried away on the photo front, when it came to this years Yuletide Festival in Blandford Forum, oh well never mind anyway dear reader / viewer browse at your leisure...

Above - Ted and friends outside his Aurora Gems shop in Blandford
watch the Blandford Yuletide Parade go by

Above - The procession heading towards Blandford / St Peter & St Paul Parish Church
in the heart of Blandford

Above - I thought this pic would catch the light of the lanterns but it hasn't really has it ?

Above - The band and the rest of the yuletide procession
outside Blandford Parish Church

Above - This photo's blury but in an arty pretentious sort of way
 its nevertheless pretty cool
as it rather catches a moment in time in constant motion
and life always is in constant motion...
too deep it's only a parade !!!
next photo...

Above - Gosh that musical instrument (perhaps a trombone) must be heavy
and to have the lung power to play the thing as well...respect

Above - The Blandford Yuletide Festival parade
continued to walk the path of Christmas time good cheer

Above - The crowds begin to gather in Blandfords town centre
to watch the seemingly never ending parade go by

Above - This good lady wasn't holding anyone to ransom -
she was just collecting money all in aid of a good cause !

Apologies for the quality of the above pic -
I just spotted a clear image of a kid in the background
and although I don't have Photoshop or similar software
it's amazing that a scanner and a black Biro
can achieve the same(ish admittedly shoddy) result !!!

Above - the Blandford Yuletide Festival was lucky to be able to feature
not just one band but two
the second being The Stour Valley Brass Band

The band plays on...

Dorset Farmers Market...In Blandford - Dorset Shellfish

Hello reader, it's a fine sunny Saturday morning so hopefully all the black ice which caught me unawares this earlier has melted in the winter's sun. This blog post is a continuation of the series of articles featuring the Dorset Farmers Markets monthly visits to Blandford Forum.

Dorset Shellfish 07881 632311

Dorset Shellfish is a small business based in Weymouth, run by a couple - Graham & Caroline - the first thing to come across about them both, is their total enthusiasm for their livelihood.

Above - It's Grahams turn to take the Dorset Shellfish farmers market stall to Blandford

Now it's Carolines turn to staff their market stall at the The Blandford Yuletide Festival !

Graham and Caroline have been running Dorset Shellfish for a few years now, so they are really quite established in their field of business. Caroline says her boyfriend Graham, sets off to sea in their small fishing boat at 5.30 in the morning and ventures 8 miles south east of Portland Bill and he usually makes it back to shore again round about 4 o clock in the afternoon, so all in all this is half an hour shy of a twelve hour working day and even after that there's obviously more work to be done - gosh I had no idea that Fishermen / women / folk (political correctness) spent so long a shift on the seas catching fish for the rest of us to eat and nor did I realise that they went so far out.

Crabs and lobsters are among some of the local sea food produce that Graham & Caroline sell at  Farmers Markets in Blandford Forum and around Dorset

The seafood that Dorset Shellfish catches and dresses up - boils in salted water or makes pates from etc are sustainable, not being too sure exactly what sustainable meant in relation to fishing produce, I asked Caroline to explain and she informed me that any catch of wet fish (cod etc) or shell fish (lobster etc) has to be a certain size and if any catch falls below the minimum it has to be put back in to the sea alive, following on from this I asked Caroline if she felt that the law under the European Union had negatively affected Dorset Shellfish and Caroline answered to the positive by stating as far as she's concerned that EU statute guidelines on the sustainability of fish in the sea was a good thing and was helpful to Dorset Shellfish - so there I've been told !

More of Grahams & Carolines shell fish produce
which as you can see in this photo include scallops, whelks and crab meat

Graham & Caroline are always keen and eager to offer their Dorset Farmers Market customers friendly advice such as how to cook the shell fish and what the nutritional value is of each particular shell fish and also their pates etc, so why not pop along and buy yourself some bargain healthy local fresh shell fish from this couple team, at the next farmers market in Blandford, one or the other of them is sure to be there !

The next Dorset Farmers Market is a Christmas special tomorrow - Sun 18th Dec in
Shaftesbury 9.00hrs - 13.00hrs

Disclaimer: The Blandford Buzz hasn't received any payment to feature The Dorset Farmers Market or Boasty's on this blog post.

Blandford Yuletide Festival 2011 - Makes The Negative National Press

The Blandford Yuletide Festival made headlines yesterday in the national tabloid press for all of the wrong reasons - namely the rogue fireworks which unfortunately and catastrophically were supposed to have gone upwards but instead strayed horizontally into a horrified crowd of spectators.

Other online publications have reported that at least 4 bystanders were injured though not seriously, Cara a 2 year old girl was hit on the head by three fireworks , her 3 year old brother was hit on the arm by a firework, a man in his forties was struck in the face by a firework and shockingly an elderly woman suffered the loss of her hair, which according to the press was completely burnt off by a firework - although it has been reported that no one suffered serious injury, it must have been very traumatic for all those who were injured - I personally would be devastated if I went out for an evening with a full head of hair and came back home without any, in fact I would be down right furious and I would be demanding more than a good wig and some top of the range Harrods silk head scarves from the festival organisers and my demands would include an explanation as to why in a sane world was the fireworks display ever allowed to be held on the rooftop of a town centre building ?

The Blandford Buzz contacted a NDDC Environmental Health spokesman,
of the perilous fireworks display at the Blandford Yuletide Festival 2011 he said that Health & Safety legislation only guards against health & safety hazards in the work place but such legislation does not cover volunteering events like the festival in Blandford forum on Wednesday night, (in my opinion the current legislation allows for the buck to be passed on many issues relating to health and safety).  The Blandford Buzz put it to the NDDC spokesman that it would be much safer and much more sensible to have the fireworks display at the Crown Meadows in Blandford Forum instead, though the NDDC spokesman did not meet this common sense proposal with an answer.

SCOOP - However the NDDC spokesman did tell The Blandford Buzz that at next years Blandford Yuletide Festival, NDDC will offer advice to the Blandford Yuletide Festival organisers in regards to any fireworks display.

The Blandford Buzz phoned up Blandford Town Council for comment on Wednesday nights festive firework incident and even though there were no town counselors available to speak to, I did manage to talk to an office worker instead, who said that it's a shame that The Blandford Yuletide Festival has been marred by these unfortunate circumstances. The Blandford Buzz will attempt to get a comment or two about this matter from a Blandford Town Councillor some time soon.

The Blandford Buzz contacted HCBC Bank in Blandford, upon whose roof top the fireworks were launched from, however the bank made no comment about what went wrong and the bank would not comment as to whether or not the said building is listed.

The Blandford Buzz has contacted the Blandford Yuletide Festival Group who have issued the following statement -

"The organisers of the Blandford Yuletide Festival are very concerned about the firework display malfunction on Wednesday night and are cooperating fully with the Police and HSE investigation into the cause. their thoughts are very much with those affected by the incident. It would be inappropriate to offer any further comment until this investigation is complete".

About the matter of what went wrong at this years Blandford Yuletide Festival fireworks display,  The Blandford Buzz offers the following comments -

1) It was terribly unfortunate & awful for those who were hit by fireworks & other bystanders to see - I have previously written in this post, I would be pretty cheesed off if I had been personally hit by a stray firework and I suppose I could have been but I did move out the way pretty quickly !

2) It's a shame that Blandford Forum only ever seems to receive negative national press, did the tabloids cover the Blandford Yuletide Festival 2010 ???

3) Though leading on from number 2 above - a person has the right to go to the national press if they feel aggrieved in any way

4) Although one of the main festival organisers the Blandford Yuletide Festival Group aren't allowed to comment, in his defense and in support of the BYFG - I must say that I remember a few years ago that Blandford / St Peter & St Paul Parish Church held a Guy Fawkes firework display at the (then before it was demolished and then rebuilt) Parish Rooms this display went without incident and I remember eating yummy hot and spicy chilli con carne which the Church had cooked and served to spectators for free.

5) The fireworks display at the Blandford Yuletide Festival in 2010 went without incident

6) Upon probing this matter The Blandford Buzz believes that there has been a breakdown in communication between all the relevant agencies and groups involved with the forward planning of this years Blandford Yuletide Festival fireworks display

7) I suspect that because last years Yuletide Festival was such a success, that the organisers this year strived for bigger and better, which is understandable and nothing less than human nature - and this would account for why the fireworks display was (in my opinion stupidly) moved to the HSBC bank rooftop- however if it ain't broken don't try to fix it

8) Current government legislation on the health & safety aspects of public firework displays is not tight or rigid enough and therefore needs further amendment

9) A leading example of why number 8 above is applicable can be deduced from recent tragic events - it could be argued that the M5 motorway accident near Taunton in Somerset just over a month ago on the balance of probabilities was due to bonfire smoke from a firework display drifting over the carriageways, which obscured drivers visibility and thus resulted in one of the largest and most serious high count fatal road accidents in the UK - was in part largely a result of a lack of adequate firework health & safety law

10) A more appropriate place to launch any fireworks from would be The Crown Meadows so hopefully this plan of action will be implemented for next years Blandford Yuletide Festival

11) Apart from the firework malfunction on Wednesday night, the Blandford Yuletide festival was a success, over 4000 people attended the said event which has to have been a good thing for Blandfords local economy

TALKING ABOUT HEALTH & SAFETY
DID YOU KNOW THAT DORSET FIRE & RESCUE
MAY BE IN JEOPARDY BECAUSE OF THE CUTS ?

North Dorset District Council Actually Helped Me In A Time Of Need

A few minutes ago, I phoned up North Dorset District Council, so this is a quick post just to say that I was pleasantly surprised about how helpful 2 people at NDDC have just been - it makes a change for a bureaucratic department to actually be friendly, helpful and amiable and to offer extra useful and vital advice, which will now help me avert an unwanted situation (mind you if the 2 said people had been grouchy and mean spirited and I had had an overall negative over the phone conversation, I would have posted to that affect/effect) Well NDDC you now have a public standard to live up to !

Last nights Blandford Yuletide Festival 2011 was a gr8 success - Apart From The Stray Fireworks

Busy busy busy The Blandford Yuletide Festival 2011 was a great local success
Thanks for showing up & supporting Blandford Forums community & its local economy
and a BIG up to Rev Tim Storey, one of the festivals leading organisers
for helping to put this (hopefully regular annual) event together

As you probably already know, last nights Blandford Yuletide Festival was a rip roaring success yay... it was just what Blandford Forum needed - a metaphorical light shinning in these strange and uncertain times and talking of light The Blandford Yuletide Festival offered plenty of that it the form of the Local Childrens Primary Schools Lantern Parade and also the firework display - although rather sadly it had to be cut short because quite a few fireworks were exploding into the crowd and several fireworks ricocheted off the shop walls, yes I was rather frightened by this so I legged it out of the line of fire so to speak - this is not the first time that I have witnessed a firework display go wrong, though I think that the wind may have blown over the firework thingy majig...I apologise for my lack of ability to technically describe the said firework hick up of last night, I suppose I could Google the right and proper term...but that would be cheating (what I really mean is that I'm too eager to write and post about what went RIGHT at last nights Blandford Yuletide Festival to be bothered with looking up firework technicalities). So The Blandford Buzz will post more pics today of last nights festivities - I just need to transfer the said snaps to my computer hard drive...x

The Blandford Yuletide Festival - 2011 Finished With A Bang !

The Blandford Yuletide Festival 2011
was a great success & finished with a Christmas time bang !

Hello - just a quick post from me to you, just to let you know what a brilliant success this years Blandford Yuletide Festival has been tonight. The evening line up began with a local primary schools lantern parade, which started from the Co-op car park and proceeded through Blandford Town centre, up Salisbury Street and then 'round the block' and back down to Blandford  / St Peter & St Paul Parish Church - the Stour Valley Brass Band and Shaftesbury Town Band merrily accompanied the Childrens Lantern parade. Father Christmas was at the Corn Exchange and there were also some fairground rides and plenty of market and craft stalls and quite a few local choral societies. The town centre as you would expect, was very very busy, it seems that people came from near and far to join in with Blandfords local Christmas time festivities. I have snapped plenty of pics of lots and lots of different folks tonight and I was pleasantly surprised that everyone was so agreeable to me taking photographs of them for this blog The Blandford Buzz, which I will share with you tomorrow and the next few days after that on this blog site - Anyway for the time being I shall bid you good night -      I need my sleep... ahhh...(I'm yawning a big yawn)...so 'til I write & You read again... x

Blandford Yuletide Festival Fireworks - Keep Your Pet(s) Safe

The Blandford Yuletide Festival will include in the line up of local events to mark this years local Christmas time celebrations  a fireworks display, which will begin at approximately 8.45pm / 20.45hrs and will continue for about quarter of an hour - I'm looking forward to this, well who doesn't like fireworks...er in the way of people ? I am yet to meet a person who does not like a good firework display...however our animal and pet friends in Blandford town centre wont feel the same way about the extraordinary said luminous explosive sky party poppers, therefore if you live in the town centre and you have (a) pet/s then remember remember Wednesday the 14th of December - which in your case & the case of your pet/s simply means to make sure that your pet is safe indoors from about 8.30pm / 20.30hrs until the display has ended, so that the fireworks don't cause your pet/s unnecessary harm and distress.
