Blandford Buzz says "The planets are wonders of the universe - they make you wonder about the universe and the meaning of life, though us bees know that the meaning of life is to simply bee happy ! Anyway don't be a lazy couch potato and let TV viewing distract you from viewing the Venus & Jupiter conjunction in the big outdoors".
Yes these neighborly planets to Earth are in conjunction, which means that though they are over 400 million miles apart from one another in our solar system, they are both in alignment in the direction of our planet Earth, hence the heavens display a seemingly optical illusion, whereby both Venus and Jupiter appear to look to be very close together as well as both being visibly very bright.
This planetary light show will continue for the next few nights and after that Venus and Jupiter will drift apart though Jupiter will remain visible for a few more weeks, so if you have a telescope thats been gathering dust in the attic, now's the time to dust it off and put it to good use - otherwise you can use a pair of binoculars or failing that, just as our distant ancestors did in ages bygone, you can simply use your bare unaided eyes and a pointed outstretched arm with pointed finger to gaze in awe at the giant and the goddess in the night sky...
